Tales from near and Far – Tipperary Artist In Primary Schools Scheme

It’s coming up to Mid-November and with this my three months project in the wonderful Scoil Naomh Cualán in Borrisoleigh is drawing to an end. Every Tuesday, I have gone to the school to tell stories, research stories and create stories with the children and the enthusiasm of both children and teachers has blown me away! We heard tales from near and far: from Europe and all around the world, as well as very local tales from the UCD Folklore collection, collected by children who lived in Borrisoleigh in the 1930s. With a detailed map of Borrisoleigh and all its 76 townslands, we pinpointed where exactly the stories came from and the children were delighted to hear stories from their own townsland – and their own school. The absolute highlight for me was to learn about the fairy fort in the school yard of this beautiful school and to bring the children into it to explore a place steeped in history and folklore, literally on their doorstep!

I’d like to thank Tipperary Arts Office for their support of this project.
